It’s not spring, but we did see some beautiful maple seeds in New York City over the past weekend, the first of December. They were tattooed in an immaculate botanical illustration along the length of a young woman’s collarbone. One slender branch ran the length of the bone and a row of seeds dangled as if ready to drop off her skin and rotate down onto the bar of the Spotted Pig, where she served a spectacular version of whisky sour, a Philadelphia Sour. Elijah Craig bourbon, bitter root beer syrup, lemon. Garnished with a rich, marinated black cherry. Doesn’t really look like much in the glass, but a sense of renewal when it comes to a bourbon experience was indeed present in the crisp winter air.
